7. Transmission

This heading covers repair and replacement of the internal transmission components including gears, synchronizers, and bearings. It is structured in two parts. The first part, 7.1 Transmission Disassembly and Assembly, covers disassembly of the transmission for access to the main internal component assemblies. The second part, 7.2 Transmission Gear Train Disassembly and Assembly, covers repair and rebuilding procedures for those internal assemblies. Repair procedures for the final drive portion of the transaxle are covered in 8. Final Drive. All the work described under these headings requires that the transaxle first be removed from the car. See 6.3 Removing and Installing Transaxle.

CAUTION-

For the most part, the internal transmission work covered here requires special tools and prior knowledge of proper transmission rebuilding practices. Do not begin disassembly of the transmission if you do not have the tools or the experience to complete the job.

Many of the procedures described in this section of the manual suggest or require the use of special tools. Unless otherwise specified, the numbers which appear in the illustrations identify Volkswagen special tools by their Volkswagen tool numbers.
