3. Troubleshooting

This troubleshooting section applies to problems affecting the cooling system, which includes those components which store, pump, and regulate the circulation of engine coolant.

While coolant also circulates through the heater core in the passenger compartment, problems associated with the operation and repair of the heater system are covered in BODY AND INTERIOR. Similarly, while this section may help to isolate a problem to a faulty coolant temperature gauge, replacement of the gauge is covered in ELECTRICAL SYSTEM.

Overheating problems may also be caused by an engine fault that leaks hot combustion gasses into the cooling system, or by ignition timing that is out of specification. See ENGINE or IGNITION for additional information on these subjects.
