The wiring diagrams in the back of my Haynes manual are not that clear to begin with, but it does help if you speak a bit of German as the colours are not translated. I also opened up the mechanisms in the mirror housings to have a look. There is only one motor in each housing and a solenoid that is used to select whether the motor makes horizontal or vertical adjustments to the mirror. The solenoid allows vertical adjustment in its idle state and will activate when the joystick is moved in the horizontal plane. The joystick controller housing somewhat resembles part of a control pad for a games console. The knob is twisted round to the right to operate the o/s mirror and twisted to the left to operate the n/s mirror. The joystick will only allow you to operate the mirrors in either the vertical or the horizontal plane at any one time and not both at the same time, i.e. you can’t make diagonal adjustments. The joystick works by alternating the direction of current flow through the motors (whichever one is currently selected) and operating the solenoid to change vertical/horizontal plane.

The mirrors also incorporate a heating element, which is stuck to the back of the glass with an adhesive pad. It works in exactly the same way as the element does in the rear window. The element consists of a coil of thin wire, which will get hot when 12V is applied across it. All you do is flick the heater switch, the coil gets warm and melts the frost on the mirror. At the moment, I have this signal connected directly to the switch for the rear window element, i.e. all elements are on at the same time. What I have found is that once the mirrors have defrosted, they will not usually mist up again during normal driving conditions (colder climates may suffer differently), whereas the rear window will mist up again if there are lots of people in the car. It seems a waste of energy (and bhp, because the more current you draw from the alternator the more power you lose from the engine) to have all the elements on at the same time when only one is needed. I am currently trying to modify a fog light switch to do the job, as this uses a two stage switch to enable you to have either the front fogs on (first position) or front and back fogs on (second position). The two switch housings are different which means the internals are non-interchangeable. The only way I can see to do it is to cut out the picture of the heater element and glue it into a fog light switch (unless someone else has a better idea, please mail me!). This modified switch will allow me to either have the rear window element on (first position), or the rear window and mirror elements on (second position).

A list of part numbers you may require are as follows;
161971970 3-pin connector plug (one black and one white per mirror)
161971975 3-pin connector housing (one black and one white per mirror)
321971998A 6-pin connector plug (for the joystick)
191971916A Rubber bellows (pass loom through this between door and chassis, cars with central locking/electric windows will already have these)
321959565 Joystick for mirror adjustment (fits in hole left by internal adjustment knob).

Golfs with small windows (1984-1988) use;
RHD:
192857501C Complete n/s rear view mirror
192857502B Complete o/s rear view mirror
LHD:
191857501D Complete n/s rear view mirror
191857502D Complete o/s rear view mirror
RHD & LHD:
N033023 M5x22 screws (2 per mirror housing)
191857543 Rubber seal (1 per mirror housing)

Golfs with large windows (1988-1992) use;
RHD:
191857521L n/s mirror with heating element
192857522C o/s wide angle mirror with heating element
LHD:
191857521N n/s wide angle mirror with heating element
192857522D o/s mirror with heating element
RHD & LHD:
191857507B n/s mirror housing
191857508B o/s mirror housing
N0141335 M5x12 screws (3 per mirror housing)

For blade type connectors and receptacles, try Farnell. A bag of 25 blade contacts is £1.82 (964-943) and a bag of 25 receptacles is £1.74 (964-918). You will need to get a crimp tool from ARD electronics for about £10. Alternative 3-pin connector plugs are also available from Farnell at 16p each (964-750) and housings at 17p each (964-840). These are not interchangeable with the VAG items.

I know for a fact that the driver’s side glass mirror (RHD) is £47+VAT from Volkswagen (as of December 2000). I contacted GPC who were able to offer me the exact same item for £28+VAT. Now I know that the prices of spare parts at VAG have dropped considerably of the last couple of years, but I recommend contacting GPC first. Their parts are always O.E..

The joystick fits into the hole left by the manual adjuster on the driver’s side door panel, which means that the hole in the passengers door panel is left open. This will look ugly and I recommend trying to fit a tweeter pod or have the door re-trimmed.
