Servicing valve mechanism
Removing and installing camshafts



Special tools, workshop equipment, test and measuring appliances and auxiliary items required
• ◆ V.A.G 1331 Torque wrench (5...50 Nm)
• ◆ 3242 Clamping bolt
• ◆ 3458 Camshaft setting bars
Removing



• ‒ Remove toothed belts from camshaft sprockets => Page 13-37.
• ‒ Remove cylinder head covers left => Page 15-20.
• ‒ → Pull off rear middle toothed belt guard -2- upwards.
• ‒ Remove bolts -arrows- and take off rear left -3- and right -4- toothed belt guards.



• ‒ → Remove retainers of concerned injectors and pull out injectors upwards.
• ‒ Mark fitting position of rocker fingers with coloured pen.
• ‒ Unbolt camshaft bearing caps and remove camshafts.
Note:
When removing camshaft, pay attention to rocker fingers and guides.



Installing
• ● Lock crankshaft with clamping bolt 3242.
• ‒ → Remove threaded stud -arrow- in front of locking slot of exhaust camshaft.
• ‒ Insert axial bearing washers.
• ‒ Insert rocker finger guides and rocker fingers.



Notes:
• ◆ Note the marked fitting position of rocker fingers.
• ◆ If needed, use a little grease to help fit rocker fingers.
• ‒ → Install inlet camshaft so that the setting bar 3458 can be inserted.



• ‒ → Be careful to align centred. Before installing camshaft, set bearing caps on and determine fitting positions.



• ‒ → Tighten bearing caps 1 and 5 to 10 Nm.
Note:
Note the numbering on the bearing caps.



• ‒ → Install outlet camshaft so that the setting bar 3458 can be inserted.
• ‒ Tighten bearing caps 0 and 4 to 10 Nm.
• ‒ Check adjustment again using camshaft setting bar 3458.
• ‒ Check fitting position of rocker fingers and guides.



• ‒ → Lightly coat hatched surfaces of front and rear inlet camshaft bearing caps with sealant "D 454 300 A2" and tighten bearing caps to 51 Nm.
• ‒ Do not coat inner surfaces -arrows- with sealant.
• ‒ Tighten remaining bearing caps to 10 Nm.
• ‒ Install threaded stud.
The rest of the assembly is basically a reverse of the dismantling sequence.
Note:
Always renew copper seals and O rings between cylinder head and injectors.
• ‒ Make sure that injectors are properly seated.
• ‒ Install retainers and tighten to 10 Nm.
• ‒ Place toothed belt on camshaft sprockets => Page 13-37.
• ‒ Install cylinder head covers left => Page 15-20.
Notes:
• ◆ After camshaft is installed, the engine must not be started for approx. 30 minutes. Hydraulic compensation elements must settle (otherwise valves will strike pistons).
• ◆ After working on valve mechanism, carefully turn engine by hand at least 2 complete revolutions to ensure that no valve strikes piston when engine is started.

• ◆ Feeler gauge
• ◆ Wood or plastic wedge
Notes:
• ◆ Hydraulic compensation elements cannot be serviced.
• ◆ Irregular valve noises when starting engine are normal.
Test sequence
• ‒ Start engine and run until the radiator fan has switched on once.
• ‒ Increase engine speed to about 2500 rpm for approx. 2 minutes.
Note:
If irregular valve noises disappear during starting but recur during short trips, the oil check valve must be replaced. Fitting position of oil check valve: Under oil filter => Page 17-33.
If the hydraulic compensation elements are still noisy, determine the defective element as follows:
• ‒ Remove cylinder head covers left => Page 15-20.
• ‒ Rotate crankshaft clockwise, until cam of the hydraulic element to be checked is pointing upwards.
• ‒ Determine play between cam and rocker finger.
• ‒ Use a wood or plastic wedge to press down rocker finger. If play develops between cam and rocker finger, the hydraulic compensation element needs to be replaced.

• ◆ After camshaft is installed, the engine must not be started for approx. 30 minutes. Hydraulic compensation elements must settle (otherwise valves will strike pistons).
• ◆ After working on valve mechanism, carefully turn engine by hand at least 2 complete revolutions to ensure that no valve strikes piston when engine is started.

Check axial clearance of camshafts

• ◆ Universal dial gauge bracket VW 387
• ◆ Dial gauge
Perform check with rocker fingers removed and first and last bearing caps fitted.



• ‒ Bolt universal dial gauge bracket VW 387 with dial gauge to cylinder head:
→ Inlet camshaft



→ Exhaust camshaft
Wear limit: max. 0.30 mm

Спасибо,конечно,что постарались ответить, но хотелось бы получить информацию на русском ,и желательно, со схематичными рисунками.Буду благодарен, если кто- нибудь откликнется.Замену хочу произвести сам,не обращаясь в сервис.

как правило одни компенсаторы не выходят со строя,в идеале надо снимать головки
