3. Troubleshooting

This troubleshooting section applies to the diesel fuel system and problems such as hard starting, rough idle, and poor overall performance.

In the diesel engine, good compression is especially necessary for the engine to run well. Engine mechanical faults leading to poor compression can cause problems that seem to be injection related. Engine lubricating oil that leaks past worn piston rings or valve stem seals may produce exhaust smoke that is mistaken for the sign of a misadjusted fuel injection system. For more information on diesel engine problems, see ENGINE.

A faulty glow plug system may contribute to cold starting problems. Troubleshooting for the glow plug system can be found in IGNITION. Battery and starter troubleshooting can be found in ELECTRICAL SYSTEM. Low power symptoms on Jetta turbo diesels may be the result of turbocharger problems, which are covered in EXHAUST SYSTEM AND EMISSION CONTROLS.
