Draining and Filling Power Steering FluidThe fluid should be drained any time the system is to be opened or fluid-bearing components removed. Refilling with new fluid is recommended. The system is essentially self-bleeding, although a simple bleeding step when refilling the system will help remove air from the fluid. Air in the system causes noisy and inconsistent operation. To drain the fluid from the system, disconnect the suction hose from the pump, as shown in Fig. 7-17. Drain the fluid and dispose of it. Refill the system with new power steering fluid, Volkswagen part no. ZVW 239 902 or equivalent, until the fluid in the reservoir is at the MAX mark. See LUBRICATION AND MAINTENANCE for more information on Volkswagen-approved fluids. To bleed the system, make sure the fluid level in the reservoir is at the MAX mark and start the engine. With the help of an assistant, turn the steering wheel back and forth from full left to full right, adding fluid to the reservoir as the level drops. When the fluid level remains constant, continue turning the steering wheel until no more air bubbles appear in the reservoir. Add fluid until the fluid level is at the MAX mark. Replace the cap gasket if it is damaged.
