Wheels

The wheels on all models covered by this manual are designed for use with tubeless, radial tires of a specific size. Replacement tires of non-standard size or construction should be used only if the tire manufacturer specifies them for your make and model. See LUBRICATION AND MAINTENANCE for information on the original equipment wheel sizes for cars covered by this manual.

When installing accessory wheels, be sure to install wheels with the proper offset. Measured across the width of the wheel rim, the offset is how far the center of the wheel is offset from the wheel mounting surface. The wheels on Volkswagens covered by this manual have negative offset. In other words, from the wheel mounting surface the wheel rim is offset to the inside. The use of other than original equipment wheels requires special care since many aftermarket wheels do not have the correct offset. Incorrect offset may cause the tires to interfere with the body, overload the wheel bearings, or affect the steering.
