Draining Water From Diesel Fuel FilterAfter draining the water separator, or on 1985 Golf Diesels without a water separator, it is necessary to drain the water that collects in the fuel filter. First, loosen the vent screw on the top of the filter. Do not remove the fuel hoses. Place a container under the filter and open the drain at the bottom of the filter. It may be necessary to remove the bracket mounting nuts and raise the filter in order loosen the drain screw. Let the fluid drain until approximately 100 ml (about 3.5 oz.) has been collected, or until clean fuel appears. Close the drain and the vent when finished, and retighten the mounting bracket nuts.
