Flywheel or Drive PlateOn cars with manual transmission the flywheel is bolted to the clutch pressure plate and the pressure plate is bolted to the crankshaft. See MANUAL TRANSMISSION AND CLUTCH (Fig. 5-1). On cars with automatic transmission the torque converter driveplate is bolted to the crankshaft. When removing the flywheel from the pressure plate hold the flywheel stationary using a holding fixture, see Fig. 6-8.

If the rear crankshaft oil seal is leaking, replace the oil seal before installing the pressure plate or drive plate. When installing the pressure plate or driveplate apply Volkswagen D6 thread locking compound or equivalent and torque the bolts to 30 Nm (22 ft. lb.) plus 1/4 (90°) turn.
On models with automatic transmission, mark the drive plate during disassembly and reinstall it with the same orientation. See Fig. 6-11. Notch in the washer should facing drive plate. Install two bolts and check drive-plate-to-cylinder-block clearance as shown in Fig. 6-12. If necessary, use a 4 mm shim (part no. 053 015 301A) and/or a 1 mm shim (part no. 056 105 303) to achieve a dimension of 31.3 ± 0.7 mm (1.23 ± 0.03 in.). Discard any shims from the old drive plate. Install the remaining bolts and torque to 30 Nm (22 ft. lb.) to 1/4 (90°) turn.
