Glow Plug System Voltage Checks

With the glow plug relay removed, check for voltage between the fuse/relay panel sockets for terminals 30 and 85. If there is no voltage, either the fuses are blown, there is a break or short in the wiring to the battery positive terminal, or the ground from terminal 85 is faulty.

Disconnect the wire from the stop solenoid on the fuel injection pump and check for voltage between fuse/relay panel sockets for terminals 50 and 85. There should be approximately 12 volts when the starter is actuated. If not, either there is a break or a short in the wiring from socket 50 to the starter, or the ignition switch is faulty. See ELECTRICAL SYSTEM for more information on testing the ignition switch. Reconnect the wire to the stop solenoid.

Check for voltage between the fuse/relay panel sockets for terminals L and 85. When the ignition is turned on, there should be approximately 12 volts and the glow plug indicator should light. If not, either the wiring is damaged, the fuse has failed, the ignition switch is faulty, or the glow plug indicator is faulty. Check for voltage between the fuse/relay panel sockets for terminals 85 and 86. With the ignition on, there should be approximately 12 volts. If not, the wiring is damaged or the fuse is faulty.

If the wiring is not damaged and the voltage checks at the fuse/relay panel are as specified, but there is still no voltage at the bus bar with the glow plug relay in place, the temperature sensor disconnected, and the ignition on, then the relay is faulty and should be replaced.
