Replacing Accelerator Cable

Attachment and detachment of the cable at the pump, as well as complete replacement of the cable, are simple. Fig. 5-5 illustrates cable routing and attachments.

To detach the cable from the pump, slide the metal retainer clip off the end of the cable to free it from the ball pin, and remove the circlip to free the cable from the bracket. If removing the cable only to work on the pump, move the cable aside, taking care not to kink it. If the pump is being replaced, some cable attachment parts may need to be removed from the old pump and reused. Installation on the new pump is the reverse of removal. The cable adjustment should be checked as described in Checking and Adjusting Accelerator Cable.

When installing a new cable, disengage the cable from the accelerator pedal and withdraw it through the firewall, taking care to note the routing of the cable through the engine compartment.
