12.4 Power Windows

The power windows are operated by polarity-reversing motors. Depending on the position of the rocker switches, current is routed to change the rotation direction of the motor. On 4-door models, the rear window lockout switch prevents operation of the rear windows by grounding the circuit ahead of the rear window motors.

A single power window that does not operate can be tested without disassembling the door. Remove the rocker switch and disconnect its harness connector. Turn the ignition on and check for voltage at the connector. Also check ground. If voltage is reaching the switch and there is a good ground, perform continuity checks on the switch.

On Jettas, an inoperative rear window may be caused by the window mechanism interfering with the motor wiring harness and detaching it from the window switch. To correct the problem, remove the interior door trim panel as described in BODY AND INTERIOR, and secure the harness to the door using a tie-wrap or its equivalent.
