Adjusting Accelerator and Throttle Cables

Proper throttle control and transmission operation depend on accurate adjustment of the accelerator and throttle cables. Cable adjustments for gasoline and diesel engines are covered separately.

To adjust (gasoline engines only):
1. Place the selector lever in P and set the parking brake. Loosen the adjusting nut on the transmission's operating lever and disconnect the accelerator cable from the lever. See Fig. 4-4.

Fig. 4-4. Accelerator cable adjusting nut (top arrow) and accelerator cable end attachment to operating lever (bottom arrow).

2. Loosen the locknuts that hold the cable conduit to the bracket on the cylinder head cover. Make certain that the cable moves freely and that the throttle valve is fully closed.
3. Lightly tension the throttle cable as shown in Fig. 4-5, until there is no free-play in the cable. Turn the locknut (1) against the bracket, making sure the throttle valve is still fully closed. Tighten the other locknut (2) and torque to 10 Nm (87 in. lb.).

4. Connect the hooked end of the accelerator cable to the transmission operating lever. With the accelerator pedal depressed to its kickdown position (contacting the floor stop), push the transmission lever to its kickdown stop and turn the adjusting nut on the accelerator cable until there is no free play in the cable. See Fig. 4-6.

5. Release and depress the accelerator pedal several times to check that the cable operates smoothly and that the operating lever rests against the kickdown stop when the pedal is fully depressed.

To adjust (diesel engines only):
1. Place the selector lever at P and set the parking brake. Check, and if necessary adjust, the engine idle speed and maximum rpm as described in FUEL SYSTEM (Diesel).
2. Loosen the accelerator pedal cable adjusting nut and detach the cable from the operating lever. See Fig. 4-4 above.
3. Loosen the locknuts that hold the cable conduit in its bracket on the injection pump and pull the rubber boot back from the spring housing. See Fig. 4-7.

4. With the transmission operating lever held against its closed throttle stop (pedal released) as indicated in Fig. 4-8, hold the injection pump's speed control lever against the idle speed adjusting screw.

Fig. 4-8. Operating lever showing positions used for cable adjustment on diesel engine with automatic transmission.

5. Slide the accelerator cable conduit as far as possible away from the pump lever without compressing the kickdown spring, as shown in Fig. 4-9, then tighten the locknuts without moving the cable.

Fig. 4-9. Cable conduit being pulled (in direction of white arrow) for adjustment with locknuts 1 and 2. During adjustment, do not move cable conduit so far that kickdown spring at throttle lever is compressed.

6. Hook the end of the accelerator cable onto the operating lever of the transmission. With the accelerator pedal fully depressed to the kickdown position, turn the accelerator cable adjuster so that the transmission lever just contacts the kickdown stop. See Fig. 4-5 above.

NOTE-

At full throttle, (with the injection pump lever just contacting the maximum RPM adjusting screw), the kickdown spring should not be compressed. With the pedal in the kickdown position (all the way to the floor stop), the kickdown spring should be compressed and the transmission lever should just contact the kickdown stop.

7. Tighten the adjuster locknut and refit the cable boot.
