Ring Gear

During production, the ring gear is mounted to the differential housing using rivets. Removal and installation of the ring gear requires replacing the original rivets with nuts, bolts, and washers. The repair kit containing these parts is Volkswagen part no. 171 498 088 A.

NOTE-

Part numbers are for reference only, always rely on an authorized Volkswagen parts department for the most accurate and up-to-date parts information.

To replace:
1. Remove the ring gear rivets by first using a 6 mm (1/4 in.) drill bit to drill halfway through the rivets as shown in Fig. 8-2. Next use a 12 mm (15/32 in.) bit to drill off the rivet heads, and drive out the rivets using a suitable drift.

CAUTION-

Protect the differential from metal chips. Clean the differential housing thoroughly after drilling.

2. Press off the ring gear as shown in Fig. 8-3.

3. Install two of the repair kit bolts in the differential housing as guide studs, then heat the ring gear to approximately 212°F (100°C) and press it onto the differential. Fig. 8-4 shows the correct orientation of the bolts with the differential housing. Tighten the bolts to 70 Nm (52 ft. lb.).
