Bearings and RacesIn addition to the bearings pressed onto the main shaft and pinion shaft, there are needle bearings in the transmission case and gear carrier housing, as well as the bearing races and shims. While the main shaft ball bearing is removed with the main shaft when the transmission is disassembled, it must be pressed off the main shaft as shown in Fig. 7-27 before reassembly. It is then installed in the transmission case as shown earlier in Fig. 7-15.
Remove the main shaft needle bearing and press the new bearing into place as shown in Fig. 7-28.
The pinion shaft small bearing outer race is also pulled out as shown in Fig. 7-29. The bearing should be adjusted as described below before final installation of the race.
Drive the pinion shaft needle bearing out from the outside of the case as shown in Fig. 7-30, and drive the new bearing in from the inside.
Remove and install the pinion shaft large bearing as shown in Fig. 7-31. Remove and install the pinion shaft small bearing as shown in Fig. 7-32. Both bearings must be heated to approximately 212°F (100°C) for installation.

The clutch pushrod seal is pried out of the pinion shaft. The transmission must be removed from the car, but the seal can be replaced with the transmission still assembled. Install the seal as shown in Fig. 7-33. The pushrod bushing can be driven out using a 10 mm (3/8 in.) rod (such as an old automatic transmission pump rod) inserted into the pinion shaft from the opposite end. Drive the new bushing in until it is fully seated.
