Final DriveThe ring and pinion gear set consists of two helical-cut gears (curved teeth), designed for quiet running. The driven gear, or ring gear, is mounted on the differential housing. The driving gear, or pinion, is an integral part of the pinion shaft. The differential gear set, which consists of two differential sidegears and two differential pinions, allows the front wheels to turn at different speeds, as is necessary when making turns (the outside wheel must travel farther than the inside wheel in the same amount of time). |
