Reconditioning Brake DrumsBoth rear brake drums should be resurfaced whenever new brake shoes are installed. Table e lists the specifications for resurfacing brake drums, including maximum diameter for the resurfaced drums. Drums which exceed the maximum diameter are too thin to be reliably used and should be replaced. Brake drums can be resurfaced by most local automotive machine shops. Torquing a wheel to a brake drum changes its shape slightly. If possible, the drums should be resurfaced with the wheel mounted to the drum and the bolts torqued to 110 Nm (81 ft. lb.). Table e.
