1. General Description
Two types of braking systems are found on the cars covered by this manual. The majority are equipped with Volkswagen's dual-diagonal braking system-a relatively conventional hydraulic system. The dual-diagonal layout provides superior stability in the event of a partial brake failure. Beginning with the 1989 model year, some models are available with an anti-lock braking system which electronically adjusts the braking force to prevent locking the brakes and skidding.
WARNING-
Friction materials such as brake linings or brake pads may contain asbestos fibers. Do not create dust by grinding, sanding, or cleaning the pads with compressed air.
Avoid breathing any asbestos fibers or dust. Breathing asbestos may result in serious diseases such as asbestosis or cancer, or may result in death.
Brake fluid is poisonous. Wear safety glasses when working with brake fluid, and wear rubber gloves to prevent brake fluid from entering the bloodstream through cuts or scratches. Do not siphon brake fluid by mouth.
Do not reuse any fasteners that are worn or deformed in normal use. Many fasteners are designed to be used only once and become unreliable and may fail when used a second time. This includes but is not limited to, nuts, bolts, washers, self-locking nuts or bolts, circlips, cotter pins. Always follow the recommendations given in this publication. Always replace these fasteners with new parts.
|
CAUTION-
Brake fluid absorbs moisture from the air. Add only unused fluid to the system, and only from well-sealed or previously unopened containers.
Do not use silicone-based (DOT 5) brake fluid. Even the smallest amount may cause severe corrosion in the brake hydraulic system.
Brake fluid is very damaging to paint and rubber parts. Immediately wipe up any brake fluid that spills on the vehicle.
