Volkswagen Special Tools

Some of the more challenging repairs covered in this manual call for the use of Volkswagen special tools. This, however, does not automatically mean that the job is too complicated or out of reach of the novice.

Many of the Volkswagen special tools shown in this manual are inexpensive and are simply the best thing to use to do the job correctly. In these cases, the tool is identified with a Volkswagen order number which can be used to order the tool through your authorized Volkswagen dealer's parts department.

Often, the procedure involves the use of a tool which is used in Volkswagen dealer service departments to make a job easier or faster, but which is not really essential. This manual will show the special tool but, where possible, describe how to complete the repair with a substitute tool or method at lower cost.

There are some jobs for which expensive special tools are essential, and not a cost-effective purchase for one-time repair by the do-it-yourself owner. This manual includes such repairs for the benefit of those with the necessary experience and access to tools. For the do-it-yourselfer, the need for special tools is noted in the text, and Volkswagen dealer service is recommended.

The special tools can be ordered from your authorized Volkswagen dealer parts department using the order numbers provided. The dealer does not stock tools for resale and will most likely have to order them.

As an alternative, the tools mentioned in this manual can probably be ordered from their manufacturers using the Volkswagen special tool number. Check with:
