If major repairs become necessary, one attractive alternative to expensive new parts is to install genuine Volkswagen remanufactured parts. They are remanufactured-not just rebuilt-to the same exact standards as new parts and usually covered by a warranty, but are available at lower cost than new through authorized Volkswagen dealers. In most cases, the old assembly, called a "core", can be turned in for partial credit against the cost of the remanufactured unit, sometimes even if it is severely damaged.
