Left alone to meet all the electrical demands of an automobile, the battery would soon be completely discharged, so, the electrical system includes an alternator. Once the running engine is turning the alternator, it takes over supplying electrical energy to the various electrical components. When the power generating capability of the alternator exceeds demand, as it usually does at driving speeds, the extra energy recharges the battery to its full potential.
