Exhaust System

The exhaust system serves several functions, but the primary one is to carry spent gasses from the engine and to route them away from the passenger compartment. Modern automobiles' exhaust systems include muffling devices to reduce noise, chemically reactive components to reduce harmful emissions, and sensors which can evaluate the exhaust gasses and provide information on engine efficiency to the fuel injection system. Fig. 1-7 shows a typical Volkswagen exhaust system. For more information, see EXHAUST SYSTEM AND EMISSION CONTROLS.
