4.1 Removing and Installing Exhaust System

Because the front pipe and catalytic converter are made of special corrosion-resistant materials, the mufflers and other pipes tend to deteriorate more quickly. This deterioration also tends to affect the system as a whole. If any one part of the system is perforated rust, it is very likely that other parts are similarly affected.

If replacing only part of the system, make sure that the new parts will fit properly with the old before removal. Parts from different sources may not mate properly. For partial replacement, genuine Volkswagen parts from an authorized Volkswagen dealer will mate best with the original parts.

New bolts and clamps are always recommended. The chance of getting the old ones off in reusable condition is slim anyway. If removing the front pipe, the gasket should be inspected and, if damaged or leaking, replaced. Use eye protection and heavy gloves to work on the rusty parts of the old exhaust system.
