Stop Solenoid Quick-Check

A quick-check of the stop solenoid can be made by turning the key on and off, without operating the starter. The stop solenoid should click (open) when the key is turned on, and click again (closed) when the key is turned off. If a solenoid seems faulty, first clean the solenoid as described below and test it again before replacing it. When working on the injection system, all fuel unions must be kept clean, and lint-free cloths should be used, as dirt and lint can cause internal parts to bind.

To inspect and replace:
1. Disconnect the battery negative (-) terminal.
2. Disconnect the electrical wiring from the stop solenoid. Clean the area around the solenoid, and remove it. See Fig. 5-23.

WARNING-

Fuel may be expelled. Do not smoke or work near heaters or other fire hazards. Have a fire extinguisher handy.

3. Clean and inspect the solenoid plunger and seat. If the plunger does not move freely after cleaning, the solenoid should be replaced.
4. Install the stop solenoid using a new seal. Torque the solenoid to 40 Nm (29 ft. lb.), and reconnect the wiring.
5. Reconnect the battery negative (-) terminal.
6. Quick-check the solenoid again as described above. If no clicking noises are heard, check the wire for battery voltage (approximately 12V) when the key is on. If there is voltage and the stop solenoid still does not operate, replace the solenoid.
