Checking and Adjusting Maximum RPM (All diesel and turbo diesel models)

The engine should be at normal operating temperature. Oil temperature should be 140°F (60°C) minimum, or the cooling fan should have cycled on and off at least once. The cold start handle should not be pulled out, and all electrical accessories should be shut off. With the transmission in neutral and the hand brake set, move the throttle lever on the injection pump until the engine is operating at its maximum speed without load. Maximum speed for normally aspirated diesel is 5350 ± 50 rpm. Maximum speed for ECO diesel is 5350 ± 100 rpm. Maximum speed for turbo diesel is 5100 ± 50 rpm. To adjust, loosen the locknut indicated in Fig. 5-4 and turn the adjusting screw until engine rpm is within the specified range. Finally, check the accelerator cable adjustment as described in 5.2 Accelerator Cable.

CAUTION-

At no time should engine speed exceed the specified maximum rpm. Turn adjusting screw to reduce rpm as necessary before final adjustment.
