4.2 Fuel Gauge Sender

It may become necessary to remove the fuel gauge sending unit to inspect the fuel pickup screen for blockage, or to replace the unit. The sender is removed and replaced as a unit, and is not repairable.

To remove fuel gauge sending unit:

CAUTION-

The fuel tank should be no more than 3/4 full.

1. Disconnect the battery negative (-) terminal.

WARNING-

Do not smoke or work near heaters or other fire hazards during any part of this procedure. Have a fire extinguisher handy.

2. Remove the rear seat. Access to the fuel gauge sender is through a cover plate secured by three screws.
3. Unplug the wiring connector from the sending unit and disconnect the fuel lines.
4. By hand, or using a strap wrench if necessary, turn the knurled locking ring counter-clockwise to remove the ring. Remove the sending unit.
5. Installation is the reverse of removal. Use a new gasket when installing the sending unit. Refer to Fig. 4-4 for proper alignment of the sender unit.

NOTE-

The fuel pickup is spring-loaded against the bottom of the fuel tank. When installing, slight downward pressure may be necessary to engage the locking ring.
