8.1 Windshield Wiper and Washer System Troubleshooting

For best results, these troubleshooting tests should be done in the sequence outlined below. Refer to the current flow diagrams for the most complete model-specific information on terminals and connectors.

Two types of steering-column-mounted wiper/washer switches are used on the models covered by this manual, depending on model year. Jettas up to late 1989, and 1985 through 1989 Golf and GTI models use the switch shown in Fig. 8-1. Jettas from late 1989, and Golf and GTI models from 1990 use the switch shown in Fig. 8-2. The terminals are identified for ease in making electrical tests.
