Ignition Switch

Fig. 10-3 identifies the terminals of the ignition switch for Jetta models up to late 1989, and for 1985 through 1989 Golf and GTI models. Earlier Fig. 10-1 identifies the terminals for Jettas from late 1989, and for Golf and GTI models from 1990. Terminal 30 brings power in to the ignition switch from the battery. Terminal 15 provides power to the ignition system and other parts of the electrical system when the ignition key is in the ON or START position. Terminal X supplies power through the load reduction relay. It has power when the ignition switch is in the ON position, but has no power when the switch is moved to the START position. Terminal Su is for the seat belt warning/interlock system. Table j lists ignition switch continuity checks. A switch which fails any of these tests is faulty and should be replaced.
