6.2 Tailight Assembly

All rear bulbs and the taillight lens are replaced from the luggage compartment. Replacement of the center brake light is covered in 4.3 Interior Lights.

On Jettas, replace a faulty taillight bulb by first removing the bulb holder. Pinch the two clips on the side of the holder shown in Fig. 6-5 and remove the wire retainer. Push in on the bulb and twist to remove, push in and twist to install. Make sure that both clips are engaged and no wires are pinched when the holder is installed.

On Golf and GTI models, replace a faulty bulb by first removing the bulb holder. Depress the spring clip at the side of the holder as shown in Fig. 6-6, and turn the holder one-quarter turn counterclockwise. Push in on the bulb and twist to remove, push in and twist to install. Make sure that the gasket is in place when the holder is installed.

The taillight lens is replaced by removing the four nuts in the luggage compartment that hold the lens to the body. Pull the lens off the car with its gasket. On Jettas, it is necessary to first remove the bulb holder as described above. If the gasket is damaged, replace it using a sealing cord, part no. AKD 497 010 R 10, available from an authorized Volkswagen dealer.
