Aiming Headlights

Special adaptors are supplied with the car's tool kit to aim both aerodynamic and sealed beam headlights. Headlight aiming using the adaptors should be carried out by an authorized Volkswagen dealer or other qualified shop. Headlight aiming can also be done as described below without any special tools, however, the results will not be as exact.

NOTE -

Check your state laws to see if headlight adjustments must be made by a licensed shop. Some states may also have different aiming specifications from those described here.

To aim the headlights, position the car on a level surface, 7.65 meters (25 ft.) from a vertical wall. The gas tank should be half full and the tire pressures should be correct. Turn the headlights to low beam. With a person in the driver's seat, the low beams must be in the areas shown in Fig. 6-4. If re-aiming is necessary, remove the radiator trim grille and use a phillips head screwdriver on the height and side-to-side adjusting screws to move the headlight.
