4.9 Headliner

The headliner is a one-piece molded panel that is easily removed. Clean the headliner using only mineral spirits, isopropanol, or other mild cleaning solutions.

CAUTION-

To avoid damaging the headliner, do not let acetone, paint thinners, or metal primer/polyurethane (a solvent used to install the windshield) contact it.

To remove and install:
1. On Jettas, remove the inside rear view mirror by pulling it away from its mounting.
2. Remove the screws from the sunvisor swivel mounts. On models with lighted visor mirrors, disconnect the wiring. Remove the visors' mounting clips by removing the mounting screws and twisting the clip as shown in Fig. 4-50.

Fig. 4-50. Retaining clip mounting screw (1) to be removed, and direction clip is twisted (arrow).

3. On cars with sunroof, remove the sunroof crank handle.
4. Remove the interior dome light, and remove the light trim panel by prying it out from the rear.
5. Remove the upper seat belt anchors from the B-pillars as described in 4.6 Seat Belts.
6. Remove the grab handles. On Jettas, the grab handle trim covers must be removed for access to the mounting screws.
7. Remove the outer headliner mounts. On Jettas, pry the plastic caps from the headliner and remove the screws shown in Fig. 4-51. On Golf and GTI, pry out the retaining clips.

Fig. 4-51. Plastic caps 1 and screws 2, or retaining clips to be removed.

8. Remove the upper trim panel screw from the A-pillar trim piece and pull from the top to remove it from the lower clip.
9. Remove the two B-pillar trim piece mounting screws. Pull the trim piece from its clips. Pull the weather strips from the pillars and the headliner.
10. Remove the C-pillar trim piece by pulling it off its clips. On Jettas there is one upper clip and two lower clips. On Golf and GTI the clips are along the headliner.
11. Remove the end strip from the headliner and remove the mounting clips from the liner as shown in Fig. 4-52. Lower and remove the headliner.

12. Installation is the reverse of removal. Tighten all seat belt anchors to the correct torque. See 4.6 Seat Belts.
