Adjusting 2nd Gear Brake Band

The 2nd gear brake band can be adjusted with the transaxle installed or removed. In either case, the transaxle must be in its normal horizontal position or the brake band may jam during adjustment. The 2nd gear brake band adjusting screw is located just to the left of the operating lever, as viewed from the front of the car.

To adjust:
1. Loosen the locknut and temporarily torque the adjusting screw to 10 Nm (87 in. lb.), as shown in Fig. 4-12, to center the brake band.

2. Loosen the screw and retorque it to 5 Nm (44 in. lb.).
3. Back the screw off (counterclockwise) exactly 2 1/2 turns. Hold the adjusting screw stationary and tighten the locknut, torquing it to 20 Nm (15 ft. lb.).
