3. Troubleshooting

This troubleshooting section applies to problems affecting the transaxle, including the torque converter, the automatic transmission, and the final drive. The basic functions of the automatic transmission are to circulate clean ATF under pressure, to provide the correct drive ratio in response to both the hydraulic and mechanical controls, and to transfer engine power to the front wheels.

The troubleshooting information in this section applies to the diagnosis of problems which are remedied either by external adjustment or by internal disassembly and repair. Most external adjustments to the transmission, as well as removal and installation of the transaxle, are covered in this manual; however, internal transmission repairs require specialized knowledge and equipment and should be left to an authorized Volkswagen dealer or other qualified automatic transmission repair shop.
