Hydraulic Controls

The hydraulic control system directs and regulates hydraulic pressure from the ATF pump to control shifting of the planetary gear system. Shifts are produced by the piston-type servo for the second gear brake band, by the ring-shaped piston for the multiple-disc 1st/reverse gear brake, and by the two ring-shaped clutch pistons.

Three primary control devices regulate the movement of the control valves in the automatic transmission's valve body assembly. The first is the manual valve, which is connected to the selector lever by a flexible cable. Moving the lever changes the setting of the valve and produces the necessary application of hydraulic pressure for the drive range selected. The second primary control device, the throttle pressure valve, is operated by the accelerator cable and makes the transmission responsive to engine speed and load. The third primary control device, the governor, controls ATF pressure relative to the output shaft rotational speed, making the transmission responsive to rear wheel speed.
