Fuel Pump and Fuel Circuit

The electric transfer pump, mounted in the fuel tank, pumps fuel to the fuel reservoir which houses the main fuel pump. The fuel reservoir is located beneath the car in front of the fuel tank. The fuel filter is mounted next to the fuel reservoir. The main fuel pump delivers fuel to the fuel injection system.

On all models with continuous injection systems (CIS, CIS-E and CIS-E Motronic) the fuel reservoir also houses the fuel accumulator. In these systems which rely on fuel pressure to open the fuel injectors, the fuel accumulator moderates pressure surges and maintains fuel pressure in the system after the engine is turned off to aid hot-starting.

A pressure regulator controls fuel pressure to the fuel injection system and allows surplus fuel to flow back to the fuel reservoir.
